Spring Turkey Hunting Season Only Days Away!

With deer and duck season at an end, the dreary days of February offer many opportunities to “Get Outside”.  Small game hunting open in February include rabbit, squirrel and for hard core insomniacs, coon hunting. But the reason for the season is Turkey Hunting! February is the time to inventory your spring turkey hunting gear.  Pattern your shotgun, check your hunting attire for needed repairs or replacement, chalk your slate and box calls, test your favorite brands of mouth calls and practice, practice, practice those enticing yelps and purrs that will lure in those wise old gobblers. Turkey hunting for youths begins March 8 – 14, with the Spring season beginning March 15 and ending May 1. Mississippi is blessed with many areas that annually produce excellent turkey hunting. Some of the best counties in Central Mississippi include: Scott & Smith County which encompasses Bienville National Forest, Copiah County in which the north end of the Homochitto National Forest is located and east Madison, Leake and Attala County where there are 1000’s of acres of privately owned timberlands.  These areas have experienced good hatches the last two years; which means lots of 2 and 3 year old gobblers to hunt. If you are serious about turkey hunting, consider one of these counties when looking to purchase a great turkey tract.
